How it began
Led by elders Johnny Melton and Alex Weatherford, the congregation met at the Lufkin Chamber of Commerce and The Red Barn while the search for a home went on. Ladies Bible class, World Bible School and India evangelism began right away. In September 2008 the church moved into a renovated rental at 210 Christie Street.
A permanent home
Members chose 2213 Tulane from five properties. In two weeks, $221,000 was raised for the land, and $700,000 in bonds sold in two days. Mark Townley drew the plans, Melvin Linton served as general contractor, and the building was finished in one hundred days. God was given the glory.
Loss and faithfulness
Paul Hillier was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2015, and we lost him on January 3, 2016. Doyle Bruce became pulpit minister that May, and Scout Betz joined in 2019. Through it all, Angelina has been richly blessed by our heavenly Father.
One body
After years of shared singings, ladies days and family picnics, Angelina and the Lubbock Street church of Christ came together as one congregation in November 2025. One was predominantly white and the other predominantly black, and each had something the other needed. Under one eldership, with our resources and gifts combined, the body is working more like a body (1 Corinthians 12:12), and we pray it is a small answer to the Lord's prayer that His people would be one (John 17:21). Scout Betz and Joe Ceasar now serve together as co-ministers and take turns in the pulpit, and Doyle Bruce, after years of preaching here, continues to shepherd the congregation as an elder.
