What we believe

We look to the Bible alone as our guide. Here is what we believe and where we read it.

God

There is only one God (John 17:3), and He is the creator of the world (Genesis 1:1). God exists in three distinct personalities: God the Father (2 Corinthians 13:14), God the Son (John 1:1) and God the Holy Spirit (John 16:12-15).

Jesus

The Son of God, born of a virgin (Matthew 1:18), sinless (2 Corinthians 5:21), crucified (Philippians 2:8), raised three days later (1 Corinthians 15:4), and ascended to the Father, where He now reigns (Acts 1:9, 1 Corinthians 15:25).

He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He redeemed us with His precious blood (1 Peter 1:18-19) and will return to call His church home (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

Salvation

Christ is our perfect sacrifice, offered once for all (Hebrews 7:27), and our mediator (1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 9:15). We each choose to accept or refuse God's gift, and we accept it through obedient faith (James 2:22): hearing (Romans 10:17), believing (John 8:24), repenting (Acts 2:38), confessing (Romans 10:9-10), being baptized (Acts 22:16) and remaining faithful (Revelation 2:10).

Worship

The Bible is the inerrant Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Christ is the head of the body (Colossians 1:18), so Scripture directs our worship (Colossians 3:17). We take the Lord's Supper every Sunday (Acts 20:7) and sing a cappella (Ephesians 5:19), worshiping in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). As God has loved us (John 3:16), we love others (John 13:34-35).

Our history

On March 16, 2008, more than 70 Christians met in Lufkin wanting to form a congregation devoted to following only the Bible.

  1. More than 70 Christians meet to form a new congregation.

  2. Johnny Melton and Alex Weatherford appointed the first elders.

  3. First service in the renovated building at 210 Christie Street.

  4. First deacons installed.

  5. Paul Hillier hired as pulpit minister.

  6. Construction begins at 2213 Tulane Drive.

  7. First Sunday in the new building, with 220 in attendance.

  8. Doyle Bruce hired as pulpit minister.

  9. Scout Betz joins as co-minister.

  10. Angelina and Lubbock Street unite as one congregation. Joe Ceasar joins Scout Betz as co-minister.

How it began

Led by elders Johnny Melton and Alex Weatherford, the congregation met at the Lufkin Chamber of Commerce and The Red Barn while the search for a permanent home went on. Ladies Bible class, World Bible School and India evangelism began right away, led in India by Hershel Bearden.

A permanent home

Members chose 2213 Tulane from five properties. In two weeks, $221,000 was raised to buy the land, and $700,000 in bonds sold in two days. Mark Townley drew the plans and Melvin Linton served as general contractor. The building was finished in one hundred days, and 220 people came to the first Sunday service.

Loss and faithfulness

Paul Hillier was diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2015, and we lost him on January 3, 2016. Doyle Bruce became full-time pulpit minister that May, and Scout Betz became co-minister in 2019. Angelina has been richly blessed by our heavenly Father since 2008.

One body

After years of shared singings, ladies days and family picnics, Angelina and the Lubbock Street church of Christ came together as one congregation in November 2025. One was predominantly white and the other predominantly black, and each had something the other needed. Under one eldership, with our resources and gifts combined, the body is working more like a body (1 Corinthians 12:12), and we pray it is a small answer to the Lord's prayer that His people would be one (John 17:21). Scout Betz and Joe Ceasar now serve together as co-ministers and take turns in the pulpit, and Doyle Bruce, after years of preaching here, continues to shepherd the congregation as an elder.

"To whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."Galatians 1:5
