Bible classes

Sunday mornings at 9:00, with classes for every age, from young children to adults.

What we believe

We look to the Bible alone as our guide. Here is what we believe and where we read it.

God

There is only one God John 17:3, and He is the creator of the world Genesis 1:1. God exists in three distinct personalities: God the Father 2 Corinthians 13:14, God the Son John 1:1 and God the Holy Spirit John 16:12-15.

Jesus

Jesus is the Son of God. He was born of a virgin Matthew 1:18, lived a sinless life 2 Corinthians 5:21, was crucified on a cross Philippians 2:8, was raised three days later 1 Corinthians 15:4, and ascended to the Father, where He now reigns Acts 1:9, 1 Corinthians 15:25.

He is the way, the truth and the life John 14:6, and the only way to heaven. He has redeemed us with His precious blood 1 Peter 1:18-19, and one day He will return to call His people, the church, home 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.

Salvation

God sent His only Son so that we may have the opportunity of salvation. Christ is our perfect sacrifice, offered once for all Hebrews 7:27, and our mediator 1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 9:15. We each choose to accept or refuse God's gift, and we accept it through obedient faith James 2:22. Once baptized into the body of Christ, we have every spiritual blessing Ephesians 1:3, and we strive to remain faithful Revelation 2:10.

Worship

The Bible is the inerrant Word of God 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Christ purchased the church and is the head of the body Colossians 1:18, so we look to Scripture to direct our worship Colossians 3:17. We take the Lord's Supper every Sunday Acts 20:7 and sing a cappella Ephesians 5:19, with prayers, songs and sermons led by men of the congregation, worshiping in spirit and in truth John 4:24.

Love is the driving force of the New Testament Christian John 13:34-35. Just as God has loved us John 3:16, we love others.

God's plan of salvation

What the Scriptures say a person must do to be saved.

  1. 1Hear the gospel
  2. 2Believe the gospel
  3. 3Repent of sins
  4. 4Confess Christ
  5. 5Be baptized

Questions about any of this? Ask us. We would be glad to study with you.

1Hear the gospel

"Then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."Romans 10:17
"You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."John 8:32

2Believe the gospel

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."Hebrews 11:6
"He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."Mark 16:16
"Then Philip said, 'If you believe with all your heart, you may.' And he answered and said, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.'"Acts 8:37

3Repent of sins

"I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."Luke 13:3, 5
"Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'"Acts 2:38
"Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained."Acts 17:30-31

4Confess Christ as the Son of God

"Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven."Matthew 10:32
"With the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."Romans 10:10

5Be baptized by immersion

"Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord."Acts 22:16
"There is also an antitype which now saves us, baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ."1 Peter 3:21
"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ."Galatians 3:27
"Buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead."Colossians 2:12

How it began

Led by newly appointed elders Johnny Melton and Alex Weatherford, the Angelina church of Christ began meeting at the Lufkin Chamber of Commerce and at The Red Barn while the search for a permanent home went on. Many works began right away, including Ladies Bible class, World Bible School and India evangelism, led by Hershel Bearden. On September 14, 2008, the congregation began meeting at 210 Christie Street.

A permanent home

The elders presented five possible properties to the members, and 2213 Tulane was chosen. In two weeks, $221,000 was raised to buy the land, and $700,000 in bonds were purchased in a remarkable two days. Member Mark Townley drew the plans, and member Melvin Linton served as general contractor. The building was finished in one hundred days. God was given the glory for these blessings.

Loss and faithfulness

In September 2015, Paul Hillier was diagnosed with brain cancer, and we lost him on January 3, 2016. On May 1, 2016, Doyle Bruce was hired as full-time pulpit minister, and on August 4, 2019, Scout Betz became co-minister. Angelina has been richly blessed by our heavenly Father since 2008, and we are confident He will continue to bless us.

One body

After years of shared singings, ladies days and family picnics, Angelina and the Lubbock Street church of Christ came together as one congregation in November 2025. One was predominantly white and the other predominantly black, and each had something the other needed. Under one eldership, with our resources and gifts combined, the body is working more like a body (1 Corinthians 12:12), and we pray it is a small answer to the Lord's prayer that His people would be one (John 17:21). Scout Betz and Joe Ceasar now serve together as co-ministers and take turns in the pulpit, and Doyle Bruce, after years of preaching here, continues to shepherd the congregation as an elder.
